The NGS tool was the factory tool for years at all Ford Service facilities. The IDS (seen above) replaced the NGS as the Ford factory tool in 2006, however there are 1000's of NGS still in use today. Produced by Hickok Corporation, this scan tool will put the automotive aftermarket shop at a 'dealer level' capability when working on Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles. The Ford dealer techs have had access to two tools for scanning Ford products: the IDS (Intergrated Diagnostic System) and the 'NGS.

This device provides multiple vehicle serial communication interfaces to meet the requirements of all Ford Motor Company vehicles. The VCM unit is housed in a magnesium enclosure with a tough, protective, plastic cover for the PCMCIA expansion slot which can, for example, be used for wireless LAN cards or memory expansion. The VCM device contains five LED status indicators to provide the user with a visual mode of internal VCM, vehicle, and host device (e.g. NGS Classic's T-Handle, PC, Pocket PC/PDS, Laptop/IDS) operation. The VCMII was discontinued due to aging hardware components and has been replaced by the VCM3.
